Method
- Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain well.
- Melt 4 tablespoons of butter in the same pot over medium heat. If using flour, whisk it in and cook for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly to prevent scorching.
- Reduce heat to low. Add cheese, salt, and pepper. Stir until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth and creamy.
- Add cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to combine.
- Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and drizzle over the mac and cheese. Sprinkle with breadcrumbs or paprika, if desired.
- Serve immediately.
Notes
For an extra creamy texture, use whole milk and freshly grated cheese.
